As a child I often wondered why my father never returned from the war laden with captured helmets, bits of German uniforms and Lugers? But there is a bigger question here, what did happen to all the war materiel that was produced?
Once one holiday to France we got chatting to a local farmer who had a Sherman tank in one of his sheds. It had been left or abandoned then dragged to the shed and forgotten about.
Well the obvious answer is all this surplus had a value, my fathers old uniform was given to my uncle who used it working on the farm. Equipment had a scrap value and a could be put to peace time use.
This film produced by the US Army Pictorial Service presumably is to justify to the American people that their tax dollars aren’t been frittered away and they government is trying to recoup some of the cost of the war.
